In our fast-paced world, it’s crucial to take a moment to honor and celebrate the rich tapestry of traditions and cultural values that define us. For the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe, these traditions are not just remnants of the past; they are living, breathing parts of our identity. One of the key days that resonate deeply within our community is the Holiday Code Talker Day, observed on August 14 each year.

The significance of Code Talkers in American history is profound. During World War I and II, Native American Code Talkers played an essential role by using native languages to create codes that were unbreakable by enemy forces. Their bravery and ingenuity not only contributed to military success but also preserved the languages and cultures of our people. Celebrating Code Talker Day is not merely a commemoration of their contributions—it is a recognition of the values of courage, resilience, and respect for our heritage that they embodied.

In acknowledgment of this important day, I would like to inform all employees that the Tribal Administration and Health Department will be closed on August 14, 2024. This closure is a reflection of our commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by our Code Talkers and, more broadly, the rich traditions of the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe.

We encourage all employees to take this opportunity to engage with our community, reflect on the contributions of our ancestors, and participate in commemorative activities that pay tribute to our heritage. Whether attending local ceremonies, spending time with family, or simply taking a moment for personal reflection, let us remember the significance of this day and the legacy of those who came before us.

The Tribal Administration will resume regular business hours on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 8:00 AM. We appreciate your understanding and support in this observance, which allows us to honor the traditions that shape our community’s identity.

As we celebrate Code Talker Day together, let’s reaffirm our commitment to preserve and respect our cultural values and ensure that future generations carry forward the spirit of our ancestors. Together, we honor the path they laid for us, the strength of our community, and the vibrant culture that makes the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe so unique.

In unity and respect,

Cheryl Begay
Tribal Administrator
